Why can I not save a Playstation game when playing it on my PS2?

I recently got a PS2 and was trying to play an original Playstation game on it (Spyro). I can play the game just fine, but it does not recognize the memory card and therefore will not save the game. The machine recognizes the memory card just fine, only the game seems to have an issue with it.
