Did you have to be able to afford your children before you planned them?

I was married, renting a place, and we were both working full-time when we had our 1st child. (planned). We hadn't saved money, but we bought baby things (so did our parents) as the pregnancy progressed. I gave up work completely, and we lived on my husband's wage. We managed, although it was a struggle. That's because, unlike so many people these days, we made sacrifices - no new clothes, a car, holidays, etc., for a few years. Never once did we ever have a babysitter for our 2 sons. We simply didn't go out without them
